TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
As a recipient of this teaching award, I have been asked to offer some comments on my teaching philosophy and my practices in the classroom. Firstly, I believe that I have a responsibility to fully communicate to my students how the class they are taking fits into the overall curriculum. Preparation for class is also vitally important. The students at NTNU are very intelligent and hard-working. My experience has been that they want to work hard and they expect that their teachers will be equally as diligent. As much as possible, I try to provide detailed individual feedback to students, because it is through this effort that I have been better able to know the challenges my students face. I also try to be a reflective teacher who encourages students to offer suggestions on how our classes can be improved, and then to use those ideas in the future.
I believe that showing students that you care about them and their well-being helps students to feel a part of the department and the university community. Extracurricular activities are a major part of the university experience for many students, and I have come to discover that interacting with my students as they participate in these activities provides me with a unique opportunity to better understand the wonderful individuals that they are.
I am grateful that I had four role models for my teaching at different points in my studies—high school, university, and graduate school. The dedication these teachers showed toward their work, their enthusiasm, and their willingness to offer individualized attention to students inspired me to pursue teaching as a career, and continue to have a great influence on my teaching.
Finally, I hope that I always project an enthusiastic attitude for the material I am teaching and for my students’ learning. Several years ago when I was teaching a class in the English Training Center, a student asked me a question. He noted when looking at my experience that I had been teaching for a long time, and he wondered if I might be bored with the same job after so many years. Frankly, his question
took me by surprise because I have never felt bored in the classroom.
I feel very fortunate that I have had the privilege to be a teacher, and to work in a profession that is so rewarding.
