【演講內容簡介 Abstract of the Talk】
In this presentation, I will explore the diverse roles of English language teachers within the context of English Medium Instruction (EMI), emphasizing how these roles are influenced by educational policies and the specific language and learning needs of EMI students. A significant body of research points to language-related issues as a primary obstacle in effectively implementing EMI. This research underscores the critical importance of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Purposes in offering focused language assistance to EMI students. Drawing from these studies, I advocate for the development of more tailored English language programs to aid EMI students in achieving their educational goals. Additionally, I will discuss the potential benefits of increased cooperation between English language experts and subject matter lecturers to provide appropriate language support to students. The presentation will conclude by suggesting a shift in perspective, redefining EAP as English for Specific Academic Purposes, to better meet the particular academic needs of students. Ultimately, universities that implement EMI must consider their distinct institutional traits to ensure that English language education is a fundamental aspect of their organizational and curriculum frameworks. Failure to do so risks compromising the success of their students.
